When Peter realised that the 11.29 train had not gone by yet, he suggested that they wave something red because red means danger. Phyllis and Bobbie's petticoats were red so Peter cut them into six pieces and put them on sticks. They pushed two of the sticks into piles of rocks they had set on the line and the children took the rest.
When the lines began to shake, the flags fell over. Bobbie realised that nobody on the train would see. So, she grabbed one of the fallen flags and stood on the line waving frantically. The train stopped just twenty metres in front of her. Peter and Phyllis explained what had happened to the driver who said that the were brave and clever children.
